With five wells, why couldn't the contaminant distribution be this?

Five wells characterizing a plume, but running off the centerline.

A better approach with a limited number of wells is to cross the plume. By doing this there can be some assurance that the edges of the plume have been found and that that higher-concentration locations in the plume have been found.

Wells characterizing a plume by crossing it.
