Modeling Subsurface Petroleum Hydrocarbon Transport

This course focuses on modeling subsurface transport of petroleum hydrocarbons. But in order to apply models to a problem, the problem itself must be understood. So we will start by describing the factors that influence observed plumes in the subsurface. These include
- the chemical,
- the biological, and
- the physical.
A second theme is that the way that plumes are sampled and how data are interpreted influences how plumes are perceived. Perception can trump the real underlying contaminant distribution, because of problems in sampling, analysis and interpretation. These factors become as important as the real phenomena. These ideas are illustrated by examples drawn from actual Agency case files.
