To generalize from this example, the number and location of wells can determine how well a plume is characterized.

Raises two red flags icon Plume characterized with five wells along the centerline.

If it is said that five wells could characterize a plume,
  • Does a centerline exist? -- meaning, "Is the plume regularly shaped?"
  • Can this be found by placing wells in a presumed flow direction?
