Misuse of Position

Now that you are a federal employee for the purpose of ethics laws and regulations, you should understand that the Standards of Conduct also prohibit "misuse of position." This relates to the:

• Use of your public office for private gain (for yourself or anyone else)
• Use of nonpublic information (includes confidential business info.)
• Use of Government property (computers, copiers, etc.)
• Use of official time (reserved for official duties)

Example of something that is not permitted: You're on an IPA assignment to EPA from the University of South Woebegone. The University is seeking an EPA grant. You give the University nonpublic information you get from a friend at EPA to help them get the grant.
