The soil water distribution or partion coefficient (kd) is often approximated by an assumed relationship between partitioning of hydrophobic chemicals to organic carbon. In this approach the chemical is assumed to partition to the organic carbon in the aquifer and not the mineral surfaces. Therefore kd is given by

Definition of foc-koc relationship for kd.
where foc is the fraction organic carbon in the aquifer, and Koc is the chemical's organic carbon partition coefficient.
