Modeling

The site was modeled in order to design a remedial pump and treat system. The model was then used to show that the pumping system and biodegradation of the contaminants would prevent the plume from expanding. At the end of five years the contamiant distribution extended no further than the property boundary.

A numerical model is required to include the effects of pumping wells on contaminant distributions. The grid that was used is shown in this figure.

Model grid

The model showed a deep cone of depression created by the pumping system.

Modeled ground water contours

The contaminants were shown not to migrate beyond the down gradient edge of the road adjacent to the service station property. This would be accomplished by the combination of active recovery of product in the source and the effects of biodegradation.
