Leaks from underground storage tanks tend to be undetected until there is an impact on a water supply well, a tank replacement or a property transfer. When these are the case, slow leaks could occur over long periods of time, resulting in a gradual loading to the aquifer. The loading may be intermittant -- as would occur with overfills -- and would be of gasoline with varying composition. The specific details on the release are normally unknown in these situations.
Less commonly, there may be a catastrophic failure and all the fuel is released at once. In these cases, there would be a rapid release of fuel.
