STYRENE CONTROL COST SPREADSHEET MODEL The model consists of a group of spreadsheets in Lotus 1-2-3 (STY_COST.WK3) and Microsoft Excel (STY_COST.XLS) programming formats. The user can use either program. Capital and annualized costs for the various styrene control systems contained in the model are estimated using the OAQPS CONTROL COST MANUAL, EPA 450/3-90-006 format and approach. The model was designed to estimate the cost of controlling styrene emissions from the reinforced plastics/composites and boat building industries, but it may be adapted to other uses with good engineering judgement on the part of the user. Costs for the following technologies for styrene emission control are estimated by the model: 1. Environmental C&C fluid bed concentrator 2. Durr rotary concentrator 3. Catalytic oxidation (generic) 4. Condenser (generic) 5. MIAB - carbon adsorption 6. Polyad - polymer bead adsorption 7. Thermal oxidation (generic) 8. Thermatrix Padre (adsorption/desorption/condensation) 9. Biofiltration (generic) The technologies and the model are explained more completely in the EPA publication, ASSESSMENT OF STYRENE EMISSION CONTROLS FOR FRP/C AND BOAT BUILDING INDUSTRIES, EPA-600/R-96-109, NTIS No. PB97-104640. This publication is reproduced in the downloadable files, STY-WP5.ZIP, STY-PDF.ZIP and STY- ENVY.EXE; however the diagrams are missing in these files. If the user feels that the diagrams are necessary, please order a hard-copy version of the manual from NTIS using the NTIS document number listed above. NTIS can be reached at (800) 553-6847. The model is explained in appendix B. The user is required to input two(2) of the following three (3) items: *contaminated air flow rate (cfm) to be processed *control device input mass (tons/year) of styrene, or *styrene concentration at the control device inlet (ppm) The program will calculate the third item. Other items in the spreadsheet can be changed to fit the particular case in point. People familiar with Lotus or Excel spreadsheet operation should be able to use the model with minimal if any help. Subsequent to the publication of the report and spreadsheet model cited above a follow-on report, entitled, ADDENDUM TO ASSESSMENT OF STYRENE EMISSION CONTROLS FOR FRP/C AND BOAT BUILDING INDUSTRIES, was published in November 1996. It is identified by the EPA number: EPA-600/R-96-136 and the NTIS number: PB97-121156. This report describes some additional technologies and analyzes the non-economic impacts of styrene controls. It is downloadable (without figures) as: STY2-WP5.ZIP, STY2-PDF.ZIP, and STY2- ENV.EXE. ------------------------------------------------------------------- If you have questions on the use of this model/spreadsheet, please call Norm Kaplan of the US EPA at (919) 541-2556. If you have question or problems unZIPping the files, pleas call the CTC Sysop, Joe Steigerwald, at (919) 541-2736.
