Emergency response at Tanker Truck Accident, Saugus, Mass.

A gasoline tanker rolled over and exploded at 2:30 am July 23, 2011, near the Essex Street overpass on Route 1 in Saugus. The accident caused the closure of both north and south bound Route 1. The accident was near homes and commercial facilities, and about 100 people were evacuated from the area. The Mass. Department of Environmental Protection responded and requested limited EPA assistance. DEP staff did not see any sheen or product in the burned sections and said most of the product was consumed in the fire. Hard boom and absorbent boom were put in the brook and downstream as a precautionary measure.
