Waste Site Cleanup & Reuse in New England

Pepperell Realty Property Release, Pepperell, Mass.

Emergency response at Pepperell Realty Property Release, Pepperell, Mass.

In May 2011, EPA coordinated with the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection regarding a release at 29 Mill St. The property once housed an old paper mill and later was purchased by Pepperell Realty who hired a demolition contractor to raze one of the five buildings. The contractor demolished machinery without properly draining oil, causing a release of hydraulic oil to the ground and Nashua River. The demo contractor also had demolished some part of the building that appeared to contain asbestos. The state and federal agencies worked together to investigate the source of oil and chemical releases and conduct sampling. EPA monitored the site cleanup, providing technical expertise to DEP, and coordinated with the federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration to ensure that the property owner continued to work in a safe and efficient manner.
