Waste Site Cleanup & Reuse in New England

Nu-Chrome, Fall River, MA

The Nu-Chrome Site was formerly a metal finishing and electroplating facility in the City of Fall River, Massachusetts. EPA and Mass DEP had previously conducted numerous site inspections through the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act Program. In May 2012, the Fall River Fire Department conducted an inspection and found fire code violations as well as issues related to the inappropriate storage of chemicals and hazardous waste at the former facility. At the time, the facility was under a pending foreclosure by the City. When the foreclosure was complete, and at the request of the MassDEP, EPA mobilized to the Nu-Chrome Facility on November 2, 2012 in order to conduct cleanup operations at the site.

EPA/MassDEP Actions

EPA removed and properly disposed of hazardous material from inside and outside the Nu-Chrome Facility. This material included liquids, sludges, dust, containers, debris and soil.

The metal finishing operations at Nu-Chrome involved the use of multiple chemicals and wastes that were stored in a variety of containers within the facility, including small containers (1 pint to 5 gallons), 55 gallon drums, and vats and tanks (up to 2,000 gallons). EPA organized and removed these containers holding contaminants such as acids, chromium or cyanide to appropriate hazardous waste facilities while MassDEP removed petroleum waste. In addition, floors and other surfaces in some areas of the building were coated with dust that was contaminated with lead, barium and silver. EPA used high efficiency vacuums to collect the dust, which was then sent to an off-site disposal facility.

EPA has also excavated mercury and lead contaminated soil from areas outside the facility.
