Waste Site Cleanup & Reuse in New England

Nova Dye and Print Corp., Waterbury, Conn.

Removal action at Nova Dye and Print Corp, Waterbury, Conn.

Removal Action – June - November 2010
In March, 2008, the Connecticut Department of Environmental Protection (CTDEP) requested EPA’s assistance to determine whether site conditions at the Nova Dye site warranted a time-critical removal action after the CT Dept. of Public Health (CTDPH) collected samples of suspected asbestos containing materials at the site. After several unsuccessful attempts to obtain written access to the property to conduct a preliminary assessment/site investigation, EPA was issued authorization from the U.S. District Court in Connecticut in March 2009. In April, 2009, EPA initiated sampling at the site, collecting drum samples for volatile organic compounds (VOCs), semivolatile organic compounds (SVOCs), polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), metals, flashpoint, and pH analyses; surface soil samples for VOCs, SVOCs, PCBs, and metals analyses; and suspected asbestos containing materials for analysis. Following analysis, EPA concluded a time-critical removal action was needed to address the existing release or threat of release of hazardous substances and contaminants. Onsite work began in June 2010 and was completed in November 2010.
