Waste Site Cleanup & Reuse in New England

Mann Chemical Facility

Emergency response: Mann Chemical Facility, Warwick, RI

The morning of Jan. 8, 2014 EPA learned that approximately 200 gallons of sulfuric acid had been released at the Mann Chemical facility in Warwick, RI. The Rhode Island Dept. of Environmental Management (RIDEM) asked for EPA’s expertise to assist them at the scene. The clean-up contractor tried to neutralize the 98 percent Sulfuric acid with soda ash and then to clean the neutralized material along with any material showing the presence of acidic conditions. EPA did not conduct any removal activities on the site, but provided oversight and supported RIDEM. Mann Chemical hired a contractor to do the cleanup under RIDEM’s supervision.
