Cuming Corp. Emergency Response

A report of a possible chemical release at Cuming Corp, which manufactures foam products, was called into EPA at 9 a.m. Nov. 18, 2009. The local 911 had received two separate calls about two employees there having breathing problems. The Avon Fire Department asked for EPA's help. Emergency responders found no obvious chemical releases and business was ongoing as usual. After talking to the two employees, responders decided that the origin of these issues was unable to be determined. Cuming Corp. told EPA it works with two companies to ensure adequate air quality. An air sample collected from the work area of one of the affected employees was found to contain a number of organic compounds, but nothing at levels of concern. EPA's responder recommended an inspection be done to be sure there would be no problem. The EPA On-scene coordinator spoke with an OSHA representative to allow OSHA to determine if an inspection was necessary.
