Waste Site Cleanup & Reuse in New England

Country Home Furnishings

Country Home Furnishings, 25 Wickman Drive, Gardner, MA

On November 12, 2009, EPA and the City of Gardner's building commissioner conducted a site assessment of Country Home Furnishings, noting there were drums and containers scattered throughout the basement, first and second floors of the much deteriorated building. Gardner's building commissioner identified significant structural concerns, including flooring weakness. As a result, sampling contents of the drums was not possible; however, photographs were taken documenting suspected asbestos-containing material, various drums containing unknown liquids and shrink-wrapped, palletized five-gallon steel containers labeled as "flammable liquids". There were numerous open and broken windows on the second floor, boarded windows on the first floor and broken beams and support columns in the loading dock area. One second floor section above the loading dock area had been removed after it had collapsed.

The EPA removal action began in September the following year, nine trailers were loaded with wooden construction debris, and the main building was demolished. Water from the hydrant on Robillard Street was used for dust control, and all material from the main building was separated into piles for construction debris, metal, non friable ACM, and friable ACM. The containers that held the unknown chemicals were packed into seven overpacks for transportation and disposal. Dump trucks from the Town of Gardner delivered back fill to grade the site, and remaining non-hazardous debris was disposed of in a roll-off dumpster from Waste Management. On September 22, 2010, the Mayor of Gardner conducted a site walk with EPA, and by mid-October hazardous categorized materials had been removed by EPA, and the City of Gardner had taken over the property.
