Waste Site Cleanup & Reuse in New England

Centredale Manor Restoration Project

Centredale Manor Restoration Project

Based on an Aug. 18, 2009, agreement with EPA, Centredale Manor began to address dioxin contaminated soils beneath the Brook Village parking areas at 2072 Smith Street. Soils contaminated with dioxin were removed from the site because the contaminants were migrating via groundwater toward the Woonasquatucket River. Work began Aug. 19 with site preparation and installation of sheet piling on the Woonasquatucket River started Aug. 24. Contaminated soils were excavated starting Sept. 1 and the first shipment of waste offsite was Sept. 10. After shipping 84 containers of hazardous soil to Canada, contractors completed excavation work on Sept 28.

On October 6, an impermeable liner and drainage layers were installed and designed, along with reconstruction of the riverbank rip rap. By Oct. 26, disposal was complete, the site was backfilled, capped and re-graded and repaving had begun. The work was done by Nov. 5. Landscaping was revisited in the spring of 2010.
