C&S Wholesale Grocers Response

Aerial map view of C and S Wholesale Grocers Distribution Center

The Mass Department of Environmental Protection at 12:30 am May 10, 2007, reported a release to the National Response Center of anhydrous ammonia coming from the C&S Wholesale Grocers Distribution Center, a food distribution warehouse in Hatfield. An employee noticed the smell of ammonia outside of the warehouse at about 6:30 pm and the warehouse was evacuated. Some employees felt ill from inhalation of the ammonia, causing 14 employees to be sent to the hospital for observation. All 14 were released that night. Four homes near the warehouse were evacuated. DEP said the local hazmat teams, as well as the Hatfield, Amherst and North Hampton fire departments were at the scene trying to identify the source of the release. EPA was asked to help with air monitoring to determine the source of the release. By about 1:20 am, DEP alerted EPA that the source of the release was a pump within the warehouse that had malfunctioned. Since the release was being secured by local responders, EPA was no longer needed.
