The Ventura Regional Sanitation District (VRSD) provides solid waste management, wastewater treatment, and water supply services to more than 600,000 people in Ventura County, approximately 60 miles north of Los Angeles. At the Toland Road Landfill in Santa Paula, VRSD handles up to 1,500 tons of municipal solid waste per day and also operates its Biosolids Drying and Renewable Power Generation Facility. This innovative, first-of-its-kind project, launched in the summer of 2009, uses LFG as fuel for two 80-ton-per-day batch dryers and nine 250-kilowatt microturbines. Approximately one-third of the electricity from the microturbines is used to power the facility; the remaining two-thirds are exported to the local power grid. The dried biosolids have multiple potential uses, including alternative daily cover for the landfill, fertilizer, and fuel for cement manufacturing kilns.
