Prince William County owns and operates an MSW landfill in Manassas, VA, approximately 30 miles south of Washington, DC. Landfilling began in 1968, and as of March 2015 the site has ~8 million tons of MSW. Presently, the landfill accepts 950-1000 tons per day, and the landfill "life expectancy" is through 2065. Fortistar, an LFG energy developer, owns and operates a 6.7-MW LFG energy facility at the site. The LFG energy facility started up in 1998 and presently consists of about 96 extraction wells and 5 reciprocating internal combustion engines. Excess LFG is used directly to heat two onsite buildings and fuel an animal shelter incinerator, while the remainder of the gas is flared through a utility flare and an enclosed flare.
