Pearl River County is one of the fastest growing counties in the state of Mississippi. As such, their challenge is to preserve the community's environmental resources, sense of place, rural character, and historic resources while promoting economic development. Pearl River County's Central Landfill is owned and operated by Waste Management. It has 80 acres of permitted disposal area with about 3.8 million tons of waste-in-place. It has an annual waste acceptance rate of 160,000 tons and an estimated closing date of 2039. No methane collection system is currently installed. A proposed industrial park, water tower, rail line, and interstate highway are all in close proximity to the landfill. The county is exploring the possibility of an LFG energy project to provide environmental, economic, and energy benefits to the county.
