The City of Springfield, MO, in partnership with City Utilities of Springfield (CU), has completed construction and startup of a 3.2 MW LFG energy project. The LFG energy project is located at the city's Noble Hill Sanitary Landfill. The 70-acre LFG collection and conveyance system (GCCS), owned and operated by the city's Solid Waste Management Division (SWMD), consists of 64 vertical extraction wells, 800 feet of horizontal collection piping, 20,000 feet of collection/conveyance piping, and a 2,000 cfm blower/flare station. The GCCS is designed to collect and deliver an average of 1,200 cfm of LFG at 50% methane to the adjacent electric generating station (EGS) owned by CU. The GCCS may also produce over 100,000 mt per year of greenhouse gas credits. The EGS consists of two CAT 3520 IC engine/generator sets, electric interconnection, and 12 miles of transmission lines to CU distribution system in the city. The EGS has an installed capacity of 3.2 MW with a net output of 3.0 MW. The EGS was designed, constructed, and will be operated for CU by Landfill Energy Systems (LES). The total installed cost of this municipally-owned LFG energy project is $7.0 million.
