Within the U.S. transportation sector, passenger cars are currently the largest source of GHG emissions, and heavy-duty vehicles are the second largest source. Transportation has been the fastest-growing source of GHG emissions since 1990, and heavy-duty vehicles have been the largest, fastest-growing contributor to that growth. Percentages shown do not add up to 100% due to rounding.

This graph reflects projected growth in global carbon emissions from transport between 2010 and 2030, based on an analysis by the International Council on Clean Transportation. Though international policies and standards, including U.S. vehicle standards adopted in 2014 have helped slow this growth, increases in vehicle miles traveled will result in higher future CO2 levels. EPA works with several global organizations to support adoption of SmartWay’s best practices with a goal to reduce transport emissions now and in the future.

When EPA first launched SmartWay in 2004, 15 companies joined the partnership with a shared goal to reduce freight emissions and improve transportation efficiency across the supply chain. The partnership grew quickly and today includes over 3,000 partners, including all major rail companies, many Fortune 500 shipper companies, inland barge operators, and an increasingly diverse group of large, medium and small truck carriers. Together EPA SmartWay and its partners are working to achieve a more sustainable future for the freight industry.
