EPA's 40th anniversary logo

The Environmental Protection Agency was established by Executive Order in December 1970, the same year as the first Earth Day, so this month marks the 40th anniversary of the agency. EPA has been honoring the 40th anniversary this year with events and appearances around the nation by Administrator Lisa Jackson. EPA has a Website, EPA@40, with a timeline of environmental milestones over the last 40 years, a video describing the challenges and progress of the environmental movement, a message from Administrator Jackson, a review of the agency's accomplishments over the years and photos reflecting the agency's past, present and future. This site also links to a Time Magazine profile of Administrator Jackson, written by EPA's first administrator, William Ruckelshaus.

Another interesting reflection on EPA at 40 is the Aspen Institute's report titled "Ten Ways the EPA has Strengthened America". Administrator Jackson appeared at an Aspen Institute event to discuss EPA's history and accomplishments. See the video of her discussion with Aspen Institute President Walter Issacson.

Here in the Pacific Southwest, we commemorated the "birthday" with an Environmental Awards Ceremony at historic Union Station in Los Angeles. California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger was just one of many environmental innovators to be recognized by Pacific Southwest Regional Administrator Jared Blumenfeld.
