Art for the Earth

To raise awareness of the serious problem of marine debris, EPA sponsored a contest asking children to express their thoughts and feelings about trash in the ocean with original art works. Bay Area students, parents and teachers gathered for an Art Reception and Awards Ceremony to celebrate the amazing creations of the contest participants.

Government Agencies Go Green

Federal agencies are committing to reduce their carbon footprint through the Federal Green Challenge. Thirty-four agencies -- representing more than 154,000 federal employees in Nevada, Arizona, California and Hawaii -- have signed on as the program expands to the Pacific Southwest.

Progress, One Year at a Time

Each year, near Earth Day, the Pacific Southwest office releases its annual report highlighting major environmental accomplishments and milestones of the past year. This year, the online version of the report is also available in Spanish.

Cleaning Up a Copper Mine and Creating Local Jobs

In Nevada, a former mine owner, under EPA authority, is continuing its efforts to protect people and wildlife from hazardous substances. A recent project was completed ahead of schedule and one-third of the work crew was from the local community. EPA is overseeing the investigation of pollutants at this site.
