State Agricultural Profiles
Arizona’s arid climate does not prevent the state from being a substantial agricultural producer. Arizona ranks second nationally in the production of ten commodities, including cantaloupe, honeydew, lettuces, spinach, broccoli, cauliflower and lemons. In terms the state’s agricultural makeup, meat and dairy products together generate nearly 40 per cent of the state’s agricultural revenue. Arizona is also a large producer of cotton, ranking eighth in the country.

California is the nation’s most productive agricultural state, and is home to a $35 billion agricultural industry. Of the ten most productive agricultural counties in the United States, nine are in California, and the San Joaquin Valley is the single richest agricultural region in the world. California produces more than 400 commodities. It is the nation’s sole producer of a dozen crops, including almonds, artichokes, olives, raisins, and walnuts, and is the leading producer of five dozen more. The state employs 27 percent of the nation's farm workers, and produces nearly half domestically grown fruits, nuts, and vegetables. Almost 22 percent of the nation’s milk and cream is produced in California, and the state is by far the nation’s largest producer of dairy products.

Nevada’s agricultural sector is dominated by beef and hay production, with more than half of the farms in the state producing either sheep or cattle. More than 82% of the state’s land area is covered with rangelands. Nevada’s desert climate, while not conducive to some kinds of agricultural production, is ideal for the production of high quality alfalfa hay. This hay comprises more than half of the total crop value for the state, and it is largely sold to neighboring California to provide feedstock for dairies, or else shipped around the world. Beyond beef and hay, Nevada’s top agricultural commodities include onions, potatoes, and seeds, the last of which Nevada ranks sixth nationally in production.

Hawaii has a year-round growing season, and supports a variety of agricultural products, and roughly 40 per cent of the state’s land area is devoted to agriculture. Although the state has been long known for sugarcane and pineapple, the farm economy is in transition to a much more diversified product mix with many smaller operations, and now leads the nation in sales of several tropical commodities. This range of crops includes ginger, onions, sweet potatoes, lettuce, coffee and bananas. The state ranks tenth nationally in production of fruits, and sixth in the production of tree nuts.
