Sauget Area 2 site is made up of four landfills, sites Q, R, S, and P and four backfilled lagoons, site 0. The site is the location of hazardous waste that resulted from treatment and disposal of industrial, municipal, and chemical wastes.

Sauget Area 2 entered into an agreement to perform studies about the nature and extent of contamination at the site and determine cleanup alternatives (remedial investigation/feasibility study). The cleanup plan selected included constructing a barrier wall to capture contaminated ground water and prevent it from reaching the Mississippi River and pumping and treating ground water off site.

January 2014

EPA approved a document called a “record of decision,” that outlines EPA’s next cleanup plan at the Sauget Area 2 Superfund site. The cleanup plan will contain health risks that are associated with contaminated soil and polluted groundwater and follows other extensive cleanup actions that reduced risk at the site.

EPA will cap soil and waste on the site with an added layer of soil, asphalt, crushed rock and other materials to contain contamination. In addition, EPA plans to use a pumping system to collect and store oily liquids including chlorinated solvents and petroleum products present in a well on the site. Measures to protect the Mississippi River shoreline from erosion will also be put in place, along with controls to limit access to the site, prevent disturbance of soil and waste and prevent using site groundwater as drinking water. These site controls may include deed and zoning restrictions and fencing. If necessary, EPA is also prepared to remove contaminated air from inside buildings on the site. EPA may also deal with mobile sources of contamination near the barge ramp on the site with a soil treatment system.

The cleanup will protect people and the environment and comply with state and federal environmental regulations. The plan can be implemented, is effective in the long-term and is cost-effective. The estimated cost for this cleanup plan is $20.8 million.
