Region 1: EPA New England
Announcing a Series of Public Discussions in December, 2013 About the Lake Champlain Phosphorus TMDL
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), in conjunction with the Vermont Department of Environmental Conservation and the Vermont Agency of Agriculture, Food and Markets, is holding a series of six public meetings in December, 2013 to share information on the amount of phosphorus reduction needed to restore the water quality of Lake Champlain, and obtain public input on a range of policy options being considered to achieve this reduction. The source of the information to be shared at these meetings is from the new phosphorous plan under development by the EPA, referred to as the Total Maximum Daily Load (TMDL). Because excessive phosphorous can degrade the water quality of Lake Champlain and its tributaries, the TMDL will place a cap on the maximum amount of phosphorous that will be allowed to enter the Lake and still meet Vermont’s water quality standards. The meetings will be moderated by the Lake Champlain Basin Program staff and held at locations in the Lake Champlain Basin. There will be morning, afternoon, and evening sessions in an attempt to accommodate and encourage all interested persons to participate. No pre-registration is required. Please refer to the table below for the meeting schedule.
We encourage you to visit our webpage after November 20th, 2013, when reports on technical analyses conducted to support TMDL development should be available. Note, the TMDL itself is still under development and will not be posted at this time.
