The Pine Bend Sanitary Landfill is the largest open mixed-municipal solid waste landfill in Minnesota, encompasses 255 acres and was first issued an operating permit in 1971. The Crosby American Properties (CAP) Landfill next to Pine Bend closed in 1989 and is now managed by the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency under the Closed Landfill Program.  The contaminants of concern are volatile organic compounds in ground water from liquids moving from the site. About 50 people live within a one-mile radius and several private wells were contaminated.  All affected residents were connected to the municipal water supply.  A waste cover was placed over the forty-acre cell which was the source of contamination.  A permit issued for operating the landfill addresses the ground water contamination.

Latest Update

EPA recently completed a 5-year review of the Pine Bend Landfill and cleanup continues to protect people and the environment. EPA will verify with area residents and make sure they are aware that ground water wells are impacted by a ground water plume, an underground mass of contamination.  Residents will be reminded about their obligation to inform any prospective purchasers about the plume.  The next scheduled review will be in 2014.
