Citizen Science projects may be able to obtain funding through the following grants:

  • Geraldine R. Dodge Foundation: New Jersey-based foundation focusing on ecosystem resilience and environmentally healthy, sustainable communities, connecting people to their natural world and building an environmental ethic of care and responsibility.
  • Hudson River Foundation : Supports scientific and public policy research, education, and projects to enhance public access to the Hudson River.
  • Knight Foundation: Fund projects that foster innovation, communities and the arts to create informed and engaged communities.
  • Lily Auchincloss Foundation: Focuses on art, education, human services and preservation/environment programs within the five boroughs of New York City
  • Toyota: Supports national and local programs focusing in environment, education and safety.
  • NYS Pollution Prevention Institute  Community Grants Program at Rochester Institute of Technology: Focus on improving the health, environmental quality, and economic vitality of New York State communities.
  • National Science Foundation: Provides funding in many areas, including environmental research and eduation.
  • National Fish and Wildlife Foundation: Will fund projects aiming to sustain, restore, and enhance the nation’s fish, wildlife, and plants and their habitats.
  • New England Interstate Water Pollution Control Commission: Coordinating activities and forums that encourage cooperation among the states, developing resources that foster progress on water and wastewater issues, representing the region in matters of federal policy, training environmental professionals, initiating and overseeing scientific research projects, educating the public, and providing leadership in water management and protection.
  • New York-New Jersey Harbor & Estuary Program: Focus on stewardship, habitat restoration and public access to New York and New Jersey’s waterways and estuaries.
  • William Penn Foundation: provides funding for the many facets in the Philadelphia area, which includes Camden, NJ. Focus on cultural open space and recreation needs of the city’s expanding urban core.
  • Verizon Foundation: Nationwide programs supporting healthcare for children, women and seniors; STEM education for K-12 youth and energy management.
  • The Conservation Fund: National funding opportunities to enhance rural communities
  • Doris Duke Charitable Foundation: Supports environmental stewardship in the tri-state area through their Environment Program which awards grants through invited proposals and the occasional funding competition. Funding opportunities may also be available through organizations administering re-granting programs supported by the foundation.
  • The Nature Conservancy/North American Urban Strategies: National funding opportunities to enhance rural communities
  • USDA Forest Service: Supports projects focusing on management of the nation’s water resources; engaging youth in conservation stewardship; promoting healthy, active ifestyles; and serving communities.
  • Hyde and Watson Foundation: Focusing on the five boroughs of New York City and in New Jersey’s Essex, Morris and Union counties, the foundation supports capital projects such as hard costs related to the construction or purchase of new facilities, building renovations and improvements, and other capital needs. Broad focus on areas such as education, social services, arts, health, and environment.
  • Norcross Wildlife Foundation: Focus on land protection, program-related office and field equipment/technology, and public materials. Very limited amount of community-service work, confined to the NYC Metro area and the towns near the Norcross Wildlife Sanctuary.
