Conceived in 2002 and officially launched on February 9, 2004, the SmartWay Transport Partnership has made significant progress reducing carbon emissions and fuel use throughout the transportation supply chain. As our partners look for new ways to move goods even more efficiently in the future, let’s take a minute to look back and commemorate our accomplishments.

The SmartWay Concept
is Born


EPA's Industry Options for Improving Ground Freight report introduces support for voluntary freight initiative.

The Gears Start Turning


The SmartWay partnership model and FLEET tracking tools are developed by EPA, industry and sustainability champions.



The Big Reveal


EPA Administrator Christie Whitman and the 15 SmartWay Charter Partners announce the partnership in Chicago.



The Starting Line


EPA Administrator Mike Leavitt announces the partnership's launch at ATA's Annual Conference in D.C. and welcomes 37 new partners.


Product on Wheels


SmartWay “Product on Wheels” public service campaign launched to raise industry awareness of partnership benefits.



Getting Technical


SmartWay launches its Technology Verification Program to assess idle reduction technologies, tires, aerodynamic equipment and others.



Crossing The Border


EPA and Natural Resources Canada agree to coordinate on a cross-border freight industry project to reduce idling, deploy clean technologies and increase driver training and awareness.


Beyond Freight


SmartWay criteria for passenger cars and trucks are established, helping consumers compare cleaner, more efficient vehicles.



Going For The Gold


19 Partners and 4 Affiliates recognized for their commitment to SmartWay at the first-ever SmartWay Excellence Awards, hosted by American Trucking Associations.



As Seen on TV


TV truck designers Chrome Shop Mafia produce “Trick My Truck” episode featuring benefits of SmartWay verified technologies and trucks.


The SmartWay Leaf


SmartWay launches its Leaf Campaign to encourage consumers to purchase greener vehicles.



Greening The Globe


Countries from around the world gather at the first SmartWay International Summit to discuss the SmartWay program model and its applicability to the global supply chain.



The SmartWay Family Grows


SmartWay reaches 1,000 partners by the end of 2008!

Offering Assistance Overseas


SmartWay offers technical guidance to China to develop a Green Truck pilot demonstration. The pilot sparked a World Bank-led initiative to retrofit 2,000 trucks in China.


The Second Generation of SmartWay


SmartWay second generation tracking and assessment tools released, serving to better inform partners of the efficiency and environmental performance of their freight operations.


Making a Port Call

June 2011

At the Port of Charleston with EDF and the Coalition for Responsible transportation, EPA announces its adding Port Drayage Trucks to SmartWay



Strengthening SmartWay


EPA hosts the U.S. Freight Sustainability Summit to discuss ideas for strengthening SmartWay and advancing supply chain sustainability.



SmartWay Goes Canadian


Natural Resources Canada and EPA sign a letter of agreement, establishing SmartWay in Canada. Green Freight EU and China Green Freight also develop initiatives based on SmartWay.



One Smart Way


Harvard's Ash Center at the Kennedy School of Government names SmartWay a Bright Idea in Government.



A Global Model


United Nations Environment Program's Climate and Clean Air Initiative adopts SmartWay as a model partnership for global replication.

Measure It, Manage It


SmartWay releases "Driving Data Integrity in the Supply Chain Industry", a best practices guide to ensuring the quality of freight-related data.




SmartWay Turns Ten!


SmartWay celebrates ten years of cleaner, more efficient goods movement with its 3,000+ truck, rail, multi-modal, logistics and affiliate partners!
