MRWMD was formed in 1951, as a Special District of the State of CA, and is governed by a 9-member Board of Directors. MRWMD services Western Monterey County, including 7 cities of the Monterey Peninsula, the Pebble Beach Community Services District, and Monterey County. MRWMD operates a 1,000-TPD landfill with 150 years of future capacity, a 300-TPD mixed material MRF, a 5-MW LFG electricity plant, a HHW, a Last Chance Mercantile Reuse program, and a 100-kW SmartFerm anaerobic digester. MRWMD began using LFG to generate 1.2 MW of electrical energy for PG&E in 1983. The system collects LFG from a 100-acre area containing refuse buried nearly 50 years. It includes 41 horizontal and vertical gas wells in the active areas of the landfill. The plant presently generates 5 MW of electricity, enough to supply all on-site power needs and deliver sufficient surplus energy to the grid to power more than 4,000 homes.
