Partner Profile
Westtown is a Pre K-12 co-ed Quaker day and boarding school, founded in 1799 and located in Westtown Township, near Philadelphia, PA. The school enrolls 630 students and employs 200 faculty and staff. As part of the school’s last strategic plan, a group of faculty leaders, trustees, students, and parents created a Sustainability Mission Statement which was adopted by the Board in 2007 and quickly led to the hire of a half-time Sustainability Coordinator. Since then, the school has cut electricity use by 18%, installed geothermal systems in eight campus buildings, erected a 44 kW roof-top solar array, sourced a growing percentage of food for the dining hall from local farms, recycled or composted 55% of campus waste, and supported a two-acre, student-powered organic farm. Sustainability topics are also taught in K-12 courses. The decision to purchase wind power for all of the campus' electricity in 2013 has reduced aggregate carbon emissions from electricity by 65% over 2007 levels.

Westtown was named a 2013 Green Ribbon School by the U.S. Department of Education and has been recognized by the Green Schools Alliance and the Delaware Valley Green Building Council. Head of School John Baird commented, “Our commitment to sustainability and energy stewardship speaks volumes about our concern for our students and the world they will inherit. We couldn’t be prouder of our progress in greening our campus and will continue to do all we can to ensure a safe and prosperous future for all children and for the ecosystems of which we are a part."
