Western Washington University's 2005 green power purchase made it the first higher education institution in the US to purchase RECs for 100 percent of consumed electricity. The Students for Renewable Energy campus group introduced the idea of purchasing green power in 2003. In the spring of 2004 the idea was placed before the student body and 85 percent voted in favor of the university purchasing green power. With support from the Board of Trustees, the purchase received final approval in 2005. Approximately 40 million kilowatt-hours (kWh) of RECs are purchased annually. In 2010, Western students approved raising the Green Energy Fee to fund on-campus sustainability projects including alternative energy production. “Western’s students, faculty, and staff continue to provide nationally recognized leadership in the fields of sustainability, alternative energy, and green-building design,” said WWU President Bruce Shepard. “We will continue to push these initiatives forward as we grow the next generation of environmental stewards right here on this campus.”
