Partner Profile
The Western Pennsylvania Energy Consortium aggregated the GL and GM rate class accounts of the City of Pittsburgh, Allegheny County, Pittsburgh Water & Sewer, The Sports and Exhibition Authority, Pittsburgh Zoo & Aquarium and many more City Authorities and local Municipalities into one purchasing authority. The Consortium was originally formed to realize financial savings through electricity purchasing aggregation, but by using a reverse auction was also able to purchase green power for a significant portion of its power needs. In 2008 the Consortium purchased more than 11 million kilowatt-hours (kWh) of renewable energy, increasing that amount by 5 percent in 2010 and now totaling 30 percent in 2015. The Western Pennsylvania Energy Consortium demonstrates the success of the City and County jointly pursuing green practices, while at the same time saving taxpayer dollars. Purchasing green power not only cuts our carbon footprint, but helps to create a demand for renewable energy in this region, which will continue to grow the clean energy economy of southwestern Pennsylvania.
