Partner Profile
Unity College, America’s Environmental College, is well known as the first U.S. college to divest its endowment from the top 200 fossil fuel companies. Our academic focus is sustainability science, with a core institutional focus on sustainable energy as reported here. As charter signatories to the American College and University Presidents Climate Commitment, the Unity College Strategic Plan includes a goal to achieve carbon emission neutrality by 2019. Our initiatives include Unity House, completed in 2008, a LEED Platinum residence for the college president. The net-zero carbon home has a 5.4kW photovoltaic system, solar hot water, and a cold climate heat pump. We opened the first Passive House-certified student residence in the country in 2011, our library has been 80 percent powered by solar PV since 2013. We opened a LEED silver standard 70 bed residence hall in August, 2014 and another is coming on line this Fall. As an example of being socially conscious to meet our ideas, we piloted in 2014 an incentive-based rebate program for staff to use at their own homes to decrease energy costs.
