Partner Profile
Oberlin College is an independent coeducational institution comprised of two divisions, the College of Arts and Sciences and the Conservatory of Music. In 2004, Oberlin College began purchasing green power as part of a comprehensive environmental policy initiated by College President Nancy Dye and developed by the College's Environmental Policy Advisory Committee. The premium that the College pays to purchase the green power will be funneled back into the community through a sustainable Energy Reserve Fund which is used to create, among other things, energy renewal projects that benefit Oberlin residents. One very exciting development for Oberlin is that Oberlin Municipal Light and Power System's (OMPLS; the College's municipal utility) signed an agreement to purchase 90 percent of their electricity from renewable sources by the end of 2015. In addition, the College is now purchasing electricity produced from a 2.27 megawatt (MW) solar PV tracking array installed on the College's property. This investment accounts for over 12 percent of the College's annual electricity consumption; and the actual production metrics have proved to provide more power production than the original energy model projected. The College also has invested in other rooftop and parking lot canopy solar PV arrays throughout campus. Between OMLPS green portfolio, the 2.27 MW array, and other solar arrays throughout campus Oberlin College's electricity is progressing toward 100 percent renewable.
