Partner Profile
The National Hockey League's (NHL) commitment to the environment stems from its reliance on winter weather which is being threatened by risk of global climate change. With support from the National Resources Defense Council, the NHL launched NHL Green in an effort to promote the sports league's ecological profile. In addition to measuring the consumption of energy, water, and waste in all NHL arenas, and working to reduce resource usage and reuse assets, the NHL supports the green power market. The NHL procures enough renewable energy certificates (RECs) to mitigate the environmental impact of the Stanley Cup Playoffs, as well as the electricity use at its New York City headquarters, pushing its percentage of green power use well over 100 percent. The NHL was the first professional sports league to join EPA's Green Power Partnership and encourages individual hockey clubs to pursue green power.
