Partner Profile
Middelbury College completed construction of a combined heat and power biomass gasification system in January 2008. The system provides about one half of the steam used to heat and cool the campus. The other half is from fuel oil. The steam from both biomass and oil generation goes through electric turbines before circulating through the campus. About 25 percent of all the electricity used on campus each year comes from the cogeneration of electricity by steam. About half of that is from biomass produced steam. By switching to biomass not only is Middlebury able to produce green electricity, it is saving nearly a million dollars a year in fuel costs, putting $800,000 of new money in the local economy (to purchase woodchips from nearby producers), reducing its net carbon footprint, and producing electricity in a highly efficient process. In February 2012, Middlebury installed a photovoltaic array of 34 solar trackers that is expected to produce 200,000 kWh annually. This array has not yet been included in our green power information as it has not yet had a full year of operation.
