iStoreGreen is the first 'green' certified storage facility in New York City. The organization purchases renewable energy to cover all of its energy use. It seems the building, which was recycled from a 1908 warehouse, always wanted to be green. Recently, it was discovered that an early energy system in the building is cogeneration, which converts one fuel source simultaneously into both thermal (steam, hot water, hot air) and electrical power, and almost doubles the efficiency of traditional coal-fired electrical plants. The system is still in use in parts of the building.
iStoreGreen has become known for being green in an array of smart and creative ways, offering sustainable materials like biodegradable packing peanuts, clean reused packing boxes, and alternatives to bubble wrap like shredded paper from the office's paper shredder, and a room for those who store to place discarded items that are given to local charity, rather than thrown into dumpsters and then landfills as with other storage spaces. An eco-tote full of green products is given to new customers, and community outreach projects educate about going green.
iStoreGreen works with the Nature Conservancy, recently providing for 500 new trees; a certificate is available to customers letting them know that their business is helping trees grow.
