Partner Profile
Nestled in the beautiful Finger Lakes region of upstate New York, the City of Ithaca is well known for its high quality of life, its diverse community, and natural beauty. The city government has a fundamental commitment to maintain, protect, and enhance these valuable resources, to assure the well-being of residents and other users. In the last few years, the City has recognized that the products and services it purchases, including energy, create social, environmental and economic impacts, and that it can use its buying power to promote a sustainable, economically viable future ― locally and nationally. Various steps have been taken in support of this vision, and specifically to reduce the city’s carbon footprint. One such action is the purchase of third-party certified renewable energy certificates (RECs) sourced from wind to provide 100 percent of the city’s electric load, starting in January 2012 (and replacing a previous contract for 5 percent of the electric supply).

Mayor Svante Myrick says, “I am very pleased we are able to make this significant commitment to the renewable energy market, as well as toward our carbon reduction goals, but this is just one part of the puzzle. We are also looking at different ways to expand our local on-site generation, based on renewable sources; this includes solar projects, opportunities for combined heat and power and district energy solutions, and more”.
