With three hospitals on four sites, four nursing homes, two adult living facilities and more than 8,000 associates, Catholic Health is a major consumer of resources. Large health systems use an enormous amount of resources, so Catholic Health has a responsibility to protect the environment and has made a commitment to find ways to reduce its carbon footprint.
In September 2009, the health system signed an agreement with Constellation Energy to supply wind power for electricity at Catholic Health's facilities. That contract remains in place today. Catholic Health has found that efforts to reduce its carbon footprint are contagious. Since 2009, Catholic Health has sponsored electronic recycling days and annual pharmaceutical drop off days, which capture thousands of pounds of unwanted electronics and medication drugs. Catholic Health also implemented a system-wide single stream recycling program, diverting thousands of tons of waste since commencing in 2010.
