Intel Makes Largest U.S. Green Power Purchase to Date

In addition to being a world leader in processor performance, Intel Corporation became the single-largest corporate purchaser of green power in the United States in January 2008. Intel believes its record-setting purchase of more than 1.3 billion kilowatt-hours of renewable energy certificates (RECs) will stimulate the market for green power. This purchase of wind, solar, small hydro-electric, and biomass RECs has the equivalent environmental impact of taking more than 185,000 passenger cars off the road each year, or avoiding the amount of electricity needed to power more than 130,000 average American homes annually.

Results of First Green Power Partnership Fortune 500 Challenge

In December 2006, EPA challenged America's Fortune 500 corporations to more than double their total green power purchasing to more than five billion kilowatt-hours. At the conclusion of the 13-month challenge, 53 companies have joined the Partnership and are together purchasing more than six billion kilowatt-hours. Intel and PepsiCo joined the GPP during the challenge and their purchases rank as the two largest in the nation.

The collective green power purchases by these companies are equivalent to the amount of electricity needed to power nearly 670,000 average American homes annually. Visit the Partnership's Web site to review the final Fortune 500 Challenge list and to listen to EPA Administrator Stephen Johnson's remarks on the conclusion of the Challenge.

As of January 2008, EPA kicked off its second Fortune 500 Challenge, which will conclude at the end of 2009. EPA is challenging Fortune 500 Corporations to collectively exceed 10 billion kilowatt-hours green power purchasing by year end 2009.

Two Texas Cities Move to Top Spots in Top 10 Local Government List

Dallas and Houston recently completed purchases of more than 333 million kilowatt-hours and 262 million kilowatt-hours of green power respectively, propelling the cities into the top spots on EPA's Top 10 Local Government list. "Texas leads the nation in wind power production, and Dallas and Houston are leading the way in showing other cities how green power can help protect the environment," said EPA Region 6 Administrator Richard Greene. "By shifting to wind and other renewable power sources, cities can cut greenhouse gas emissions and change the way we generate energy."

Top Partner Lists & Update Schedule

The Partnership recently updated the National Top 25 List, which highlights the Green Power Partners that have completed the nation's largest voluntary green power purchases for the period. With Intel now in the No. 1 spot, PepsiCo moved to No. 2, followed by the U.S. Air Force, Wells Fargo & Company, and Whole Foods Market. New additions to the Top 25 and other Top Partner lists include:

  • Top 25 National List — Intel Corporation (No. 1), City of Dallas, TX (No. 9), and City of Houston, TX (No. 12)
  • Top 10 Local Government List — City of Dallas, TX (No. 1) and City of Houston, TX (No. 2)
  • Fortune 500 Green Power Challenge — Intel Corporation (No. 1), Lockheed Martin Corporate Headquarters Buildings (No. 23-tie), Dell Inc. (No. 31), Raytheon/Aurora, CO (No. 38-tie)

EPA is scheduled to update the Top Partner lists in late April 2008. The deadline to submit updated Partner purchase information to EPA is April 8, 2008. This deadline is in effect for all of EPA's Top Partner lists and the College & University Green Power Challenge. Partners with updated green power purchase information should contact Blaine Collison (collison.blaine@epa.gov, 202-343-9139) or their individual account manager.

Deadline for 2007-2008 College & University Challenge Submissions Nears

The deadline is fast approaching for colleges and universities to submit new or updated purchase information in order to participate in EPA's College & University Green Power Challenge. All information must be received by April 8, 2008.

The Challenge began in Spring 2007, when EPA began tracking the collegiate athletic conferences with the highest combined green power purchases in the nation. The College & University Green Power Challenge is open to all U.S. colleges, universities, and conferences. To be eligible, a conference must include at least one Green Power Partner and have an aggregate green power purchase of at least 10,000,000 kilowatt-hours for the conference.

EPA will recognize the largest single purchaser within each eligible conference as 2007-2008 EPA Green Power Challenge conference champions. In addition, EPA will recognize the members of the single conference with the greatest aggregate kilowatt-hour total as the overall champion.

More than 40 higher education institutions and 19 conferences are competing head to head, with the following three conferences currently in contention for the overall championship:

  1. Ivy League
  2. University Athletic Association
  3. Big Ten

New Green Power Equivalency Calculator Available

Ever wondered how you can best communicate information about the impacts of your green power purchase? The Green Power Partnership's new Equivalency Calculator can help! The Equivalency Calculator can help you better communicate your green power purchase to stakeholders by translating the kilowatt-hours of your purchase into more understandable terms. When you input the total kilowatt-hours of your green power purchase (along with some other inputs), the calculator generates an estimated equivalent in terms of emissions avoided from passenger vehicles or gallons of gasoline consumed. Is Your Organization a Green Power Partner? Don't Forget to Use the Partner Mark!

EPA encourages Green Power Partners to use the Partner mark in connection with messaging about green power and their organization's participation in the Partnership. Partners can use the Partner mark on the pages of their Web sites and in information materials (e.g., brochures, packaging, annual reports) that identify the organization as a Green Power Partner or that discuss the organization's use of green power. EPA advises that all Partners review EPA's guidelines for using the mark (PDF) (2 pp, 150K, About PDF) before displaying the Green Power Partner mark.
