Two Pepsi Bottlers Make Top 25 on Updated Partner List

EPA’s recently updated National Top 25 list ranks independent Pepsi bottlers - The Pepsi Bottling Group, Inc. and PepsiAmericas, Inc. - as the 4th and 13th, respectively, in Green Power purchases for the quarter. The list highlights EPA’s Green Power Partners that have completed the nation’s largest voluntary green power purchases for the period.

Pepsico logoThe Pepsi bottlers’ individual purchases demonstrate that a group of companies, tied together by a supply chain, can help protect the environment by buying green power. The total aggregate purchase of The Pepsi Bottling Group, Inc., PepsiAmericas, Inc., and Pepsi Bottling Ventures, LLC is nearly 629 million kilowatt hours (kWh) per year.

PepsiCo’s announcement produced positive media coverage, including stories in the Wall Street Journal and Forbes. To see the coverage on EPA’s Green Power Partnership Web site, please visit: http://www.epa.gov/greenpower/newsroom/inthenews.htm.

Other activity from the updated Top 25 national list: Kohl’s Department Stores increased its purchase of green power, moving the clothing retailer to the eighth spot on the list, and Mohawk Fine Papers placed on the list at 22nd.

The National Top 25 Green Power Purchasers help drive the development of additional green power resources. Combined, these purchases amount to 6.2 billion kWh annually, which is more than 60 percent of the green power commitments made by all EPA Green Power Partners. This is equivalent to reducing greenhouse gas emissions equivalent to those of more than 700,000 vehicles.

Highlights From Other Top Partner Lists

  • Top 10 Retail List — Kohl’s Department Stores moves up to No. 2 on the list
  • Top 10 Federal Government List — U.S. NPS / Statue of Liberty NM and Ellis Island join the list for the first time at No. 8
  • Top 100% Green Power Purchasers — New to this list: The Pepsi Bottling Group, Inc. (No. 3) and PepsiAmericas, Inc. (No. 5)
  • Fortune 500 Green Power Challenge — New to the list: The Pepsi Bottling Group, Inc. (No. 4), Aramark Parks & Resorts (No. 25), Autoliv/Ogden Facility (No. 43)

12th National Renewable Energy Marketing Conference, Oct. 21-24, 2007, Philadelphia, PA

Registration is now open for the 12th National Renewable Energy Marketing Conference! The industry’s main annual gathering, attended by leading renewable energy and green power industry stakeholders, is taking place Oct. 21-24 at the Sheraton Society Hill Hotel in Philadelphia's historic district.

The theme of this year’s conference is “Marketing Renewables in a Carbon-conscious World.” Each year the most influential key players gather to learn and listen to the major issues facing the industry. Attendees include power marketers, renewable energy developers, retail and wholesale green power suppliers, electric utilities, government agencies and energy consultants to name a few. During the conference, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) will present the Seventh Annual National Green Power Leadership Awards. These prestigious green power awards recognize the actions of individuals, companies and organizations that have significantly advanced the development of renewable electricity sources through green power markets. EPA, DOE, and the Center for Resource Solutions (CRS) sponsor the annual awards.

Sector Spotlight: Lawrence, Kansas Announces Green Power Community Challenge

Welcome to a Green Power Community posterThe City of Lawrence, Kan., has announced a community green power challenge as a way to reduce its carbon emissions. To achieve this goal, Lawrence is looking to residents and businesses to purchase green power.

"Our hope is by the end of the year, two percent of all electricity used city-wide will come from renewable resources," said Kevin Doyle, infrastructure and development coordinator, City of Lawrence, Kan. If Lawrence achieves the two percent mark, it will receive EPA recognition as a Green Power Community.

There are currently a total of 11 publicly announced EPA Green Power Communities nationwide. EPA extends the Green Power honor to communities that voluntarily meet or exceed the Agency’s minimum green power purchase requirements. Green Power Community campaigns demonstrate the benefits of collective action and successful partnership between local government, businesses, residents and local organizations. EPA Green Power Communities include: Boulder, Colo., Palo Alto, Calif., Beaverton, Cannon Beach, Corvallis, Lincoln City, & Salem, Ore., Alta, Moab, & Park City, Utah and Bellingham, Wash.
